10 easy ways to prevent split ends

How to prevent split ends?

Are you sick and tired of split ends wrecking your hair goals?
If your answer is 'yes', we have some good news for you!

Although the only way to get rid of split ends is to cut them off, there are plenty of 'easy' things you can do day-to-day to prevent them!

 1. Watch the heat on your hair tools

Although we all love turning on the heat to curl, straighten, wave or blow dry our hair, our ends think otherwise. What's interesting is by simply turning down the heat (so it's not on the highest setting), the number of split ends formed can drastically be reduced. So next time you reach out for your hair tools try using a lower setting.

2. Use a heat protectant

On the hair tool note, another way to help reduce split ends is to use a heat protectant before applying heat to your hair. This will help mitigate some of the damage from your hair tools.

3. Stick to your natural hair colour

While colouring your hair looks great and becomes apart of your identity, it can damage your hair, causing those nasty split ends to appear. If you can't live without colouring your hair, try using other colouring methods that aren't as intrusive on your hair such as babylights or say yolo.

4. Avoid brushing your hair while it's wet

Your hair is at its weakest point while wet. When your hair is wet, the strands swell, making them more fragile, more vulnerable and more likely to break. Hence, when you go to brush wet hair, it is more likely to break, causing split ends.

5. Be gentle when brushing your hair

While brushing your hair hard and fast can speed up your brushing time it can also cause those nasty split ends to appear! Brushing your hair gently and from the bottom up will help detangle your hair easily and prevent hair breakage and split ends to appear.

6. Look at your hair brush

Using a hair brush that is gentle on your hair is critical to preventing hair breakage and split ends. There are so many hair brushes on the market that pull on your hair, leading to lots of hair breakage and split ends to appear. Did you know that a Laveett hair brush detangles hair easily and quickly whilst being gentle on your hair resulting in less hair breakage and split ends? Our founder Kylie created the Laveett hair brush for this exact purpose after struggling with hair brushes that hurt, pulled on her hair, which resulted in a lot of hair breakage and split ends.

7. Let your hair down

While putting and leaving your hair up is convenient, especially while exercising or to keep it off your face, the friction of the hair tie on your hair can lead to split ends.

8. Say yes to a trim

Yes, you heard that correctly! Although we often avoid getting a trim as it takes length off our beauty hair goals, it is crucial as it will help remove split ends which if not removed will cause more damage to your hair in the future. So how often should you be getting a trim? Well, hairstylists recommend every six to eight weeks.

9. Don't over-wash your hair

Did you know that washing your hair too often can strip all the natural oils from your hair causing split ends? So how often should you wash your hair? Well, it depends on your hair type and how active you are.  Usually once or twice a week for normal hair.

10. Avoid hot showers

Aren't we all a sucker for hot steamy showers? Well, we certainly are at Laveett HQ. But what you may not realise is that hot water weakens and strips moisture from your hair making it more prone to hair breakage! So next time you want a hot steamy shower maybe put a shower cap on to protect your gorgeous hair and stick to washing your hair in lukewarm water.

So are your hair habits causing split ends? Maybe Laveett can come to your rescue...
